Looking For A Window

I’ve been trying to find a 30 minute window all day to run day 2 of the program.  I’m glad I finally did :)

I missed out on the opportunity to run this morning and decided I would hold out until lunch; as I was working from home today and a lunchtime run appealed to me.

However as the day chugged on problems at work arose and at the time it looked like I might have to make a mercy dash in the car to our Wembley unit.  An engineer from BT had cut the blue wire instead of the red and the whole unit was now offline.

I also had a visit from colleague Carl planned and the delivery of some home furniture, for my Brother, was due to arrive mid afternoon.

Fortunately the engineer resolved his red wire blue wire issues and the delivery van broke down in Northamptonshire.

So a window of opportunity presented itself and I laced on the running shoes and ran !

I chose not to run Gillingham Park at this late hour as it was very poorly lit.

So I pressed on up the Rainham Road.

I really must find somewhere more appealing to run of an evening.

I was hoping to run a circuit or two of St Marys Island down by the old Chatham docks at some point.

Home again now, refueling with a couple of pints of water.

I enjoyed Tonights Run :)

I’m still awaiting the delivery the home furniture !

I want to take this opportunity to thank Brother Kevin and Sister Beckie for sponsoring me in the BHF London to Brighton Bike Ride 2009 :)

Couch to 5k Program: Week 1 - Day 2

Watch And Ride

Last weekend I managed to grab myself an exercise bike from Ellie.

I am slowly building a small home gym of sorts in my daughters old bedroom and the exercise bike is a good addition to the collection there.

However I was not looking forward to staring at a wall Winnie the Pooh and Friends whilst exercising and have been contemplating mounting some sort of shelf upon which I could rest my laptop.

I have a lot of TV to catch up on you see and rarely find the time to watch it of an evening.  Some of the shows I have acquired have been transcoded down to my iPhone but I rarely find time to watch anything on that either.

Upon returning home this evening I stumbled on an old TV wall mounting bracket thingy in the basement that would satisfy the job so I set about getting it fixed to the wall.

Some screws, some cable ties and a few minutes later it was done.

I can now catch up on my episodes of Heroes, 24 and Fringe and the likes and also get some exercise as I do.

I may even take the opportunity to answer a few emails whilst I ride.

I’m not sure about working the helpdesk from it though :)

Why so tired ?

This morning I ran my first couch to 5k run.

I have decided to make use of my iPhone to help me progress in this challenge by leveraging the services provided by RunKeeper and the Podcast for Running by Robert Ullrey.

As detailed by Robert on his site week one of my nine week challenge involves the following:

‘You’ll have a brisk five minute walking warmup followed by eight sets of 60 second interval runs. A 90 second recovery will follow each interval and you’ll finish up with a 5 minute cool down.’

I’ll be running this routine two more times this week before progressing to week two.

I felt the run went well and by the eighth set I was beginning to feel what could only be described of as ‘the burn’ and ‘the burn’ felt good.

I was greatful for the five minute cool down when it finally arrived though.

You can review my run here.

I am writing this from work at the moment.  It’s late in the evening and I am watching a progress bar on a server via VNC as it synchronises content from one device to another.

It’s hit 8% and I am tired.

So I will bid you all a good evening.

No runnning is planned tomorrow, I do however feel the urge to hit the local swimming pool before embarking on another day of work.

by the way, no cigarettes were harmed in the making of this day :) yay

Couch to 5k Program: Week 1 - Day 1

Using RunKeeper on my iPhone will allow me to keep track of my progress over the next nine weeks.

I needs me a plan !

Myself and a number of colleagues from work are cycling the British Heart Foundation London to Bright Bike Ride 2009 in June.

Lately I’ve been enjoying visits to my local swimming pool.

In the back of my mind I’ve also been considering establishing a routine of exercise.

I’m also a smoker.  I’m not a fan or a hater of the cigarette, I just see it as a habit.  A habit that I need to kick to be honest with you.

To that end I needs me a plan !

Starting Monday the 23rd March I plan to start running the Couch to 5k Running Plan.

I also intend to stop smoking the very same day !

My exercise routine during the weekdays of each week will now alternate between running and swimming.  Come the weekend I may mix it up a little and throw some cycling in there as well.

I have decided to use tumblr as a method of keeping track of what I get up to, help me stay true to my goals and focus on attaining them.

I hope you’ll help me along in this endeavour by adding comment and support as I travel this unfamiliar path :)

Go Team Dave is not going to be all about the sweat, the burn and the pace data.  I will be injecting posts about other subjects into the stream here.  It’s just right now I’m all about the exercise !  It’s the catalyst :)

Cheerio for now.

Dave

Ps. I have a fundraising page for the bike ride online here :)

Greetings and Salutations

Welcome to my tumblr blog.

I’m Dave, a thirtysomething year old tech guy who works in the UK for a national office supplies group.

I love tech, probably a little too much, and can be found dabbling in all manner of things computer related.

I have a five year old daughter who is simply amazing and an ex wife who is pretty impressive and doing a wonderful job as Mum.

When I’m not working you’ll find me aimlessly surfing the internet checking out websites.  I frequently keep an eye on the following:

I’m an avid listener of podcasts being a keen follower of TWiT, VirginWorlds and GamerCast Network to name a few.

I’ve recently taken to swimming at my local leisure centre and I’m considering doing some running to get a little fitter.  I’ve signed up to ride in this years London to Brighton bike ride with some colleagues from work you see.

I am hoping that maintaining a little blog containing my exploits with regards will discipline me a little ?

When I’m not working or listening to podcasts or surfing the web I like me some game time.  Lately my gaming has been solely carried out on my recently acquired iPhone.  However I can sometimes be found playing Lord Of The Rings Online from time to time as well.

That’s a brief intro to me and what I’m kinda about right now.

Thanks for reading.

Cheerio
